The First Week of Employment

  • Richard Riordan

Starting a new job is a very exciting time but can also be stressful as you walk into the unknown and settle into your new position. Here are some tips to assist in your transition as the newcomer in the kitchen / venue.

Take your Time

Of course you want to get into the kitchen and show your skills, knowledge and expertise. You want to be seen as professional and motivated. This does not mean that you have to know everything about everything straight away. Ask questions! You are new and it’s much better to do something the right way the first time, rather than guessing and having to re-do your work.

First Impressions

A friendly personality and attitude will go a long way with your new team. Take the time to get to know everyone you are working with. Build strong relationships so you can work together effectively.

Ask for Feedback

Asking for feedback in your first few months will help you learn your job quickly and avoid needless mistakes.

Look Around You

Take note of how everything is done around you – this will assist in your assimilation into the culture of the venue and will make you a valuable member of the team in no time. Familiarise yourself with the work ethic of the team. Accept that it will take time for people to get to know you and trust you.

Make an Effort

If you are invited for lunch or to a social function with your team – go along. Many friendships begin in more relaxed surroundings.

Most of all – enjoy your new role and embrace the opportunity! You can gain cooperation and respect through being friendly, approachable and listening to instructions.
